SUBMISSIONS GUIDELINES

***NSJ is now only accepting submissions for the 2010-2011 volume.***

NSJ publishes a range of original scholarly and practical works covering a wide spectrum of national security related issues of contemporary relevance.  Part of our mission is to support the work of junior scholars, and we encourage submissions of well-written, original works from scholars and practitioners.

We request that contributors comply with the following standards:

Electronic Submissions: We encourage authors to submit their manuscripts electronically and preferably in Microsoft Word format.  Submissions should be emailed as an attachment to nsj@law.harvard.edu with the word “Submissions” and the author’s last name in the subject line.

Hard Copy Submissions: Submissions by mail should be typed, double-spaced, and accompanied by a CD or other electronic medium containing the submission in Microsoft Word.  Mail submissions to the address:

HLS National Security Journal
C/O Journals Office
Harvard Law School
1541 Massachusetts Avenue
Cambridge, MA  02138

Citation Format: Please use footnotes rather than endnotes.  Our preferred footnote style is  The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation (18th ed. 2005).

Length Limitations: We publish articles in a variety of lengths.   We prefer articles between 3,000 and 10,000 words in length that we can edit and publish quickly.   However, we also accept traditional academic articles up to 50,000 words in length.  We will publish articles exceeding 50,000 words in exceptional circumstances.

Review Process: We accept pieces for submission on a rolling basis throughout the year. Pieces that meet our guidelines will be read and evaluated. We make every effort to give each piece a thorough and timely review.  After review, a Submissions Editor will respond with a decision on the piece.  This process may take four to eight weeks, but please allow for a longer response time during the summer months.

Editing Process: Once an article is accepted, it will be assigned to an article team led by a Senior Editor.  The article team will work with the author to have the article edited and published in six to eight weeks.  More lengthy, traditional scholarly pieces may require a slightly longer editing timeframe.  We will make every effort to comply with this schedule, and we appreciate efforts by authors to do the same.

NSJ accepts submissions on a rolling basis, but is now only accepting submissions for the 2010-2011 volume.

Student Submissions:

NSJ encourages student writing and provides an excellent opportunity for student publications. Students are encouraged to submit written pieces in the form of a student note, news digest, current event, case review, article summary, legislation review, or book review.  Pieces may be submitted electronically to nsj@law.harvard.edu with the words “Student Submission” in the subject line.

Unfortunately, at this time NSJ does not accept submissions from authors outside of Harvard Law School and graduate schools affiliated with Harvard Law.  Please contact us if you have any questions about this policy.
